Speaker Bios

Dr. Brian King is the Executive Vice President, U.S. Programs, at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Dr. King has worked for more than two decades to provide sound scientific evidence to inform tobacco control policy and to effectively communicate this information to key stakeholders, including decision makers, the media, and the general public. Prior to joining the Campaign for the Tobacco-Free Kids, he served as the Director of the Center for Tobacco Products at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He previously served as the Deputy Director for Research Translation in the Office on Smoking and Health at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and as the executive editor of Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report. He has authored more than 200 scientific journal articles related to tobacco prevention and control, served as senior associate editor for multiple U.S. Surgeon General’s Reports on tobacco, and was lead author of CDC’s 2014 evidence-based guide, “Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs.” Dr. King holds a Ph.D. and M.P.H. in Epidemiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Les Hagen is the Executive Director of (ASH Canada) and has served in this capacity for over three decades. Les also serves as the North America lead for the tobacco control section of The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. In his role with ASH, Les has provided regional, national and global leadership on tobacco reduction and has helped to secure numerous significant policy measures. These measures have included policies to improve tobacco retailer compliance. Les has participated in several summits for the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) as the official NGO representative for Canada. In 2022, Les led the development of the Global Tobacco Control Progress Hub—the world’s first open-access public health treaty surveillance platform. Les has received numerous awards for his work in tobacco control, including a Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.

John Jasek is the Director of Research and Evaluation in the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention at the New York City Health Department. Since joining the agency in 2005, he has worked extensively on the City’s tobacco control efforts, including program evaluation, policy and media development. He holds an MPA in Health Policy and Management from NYU Wagner.

Mollie Mayfield is a Senior Policy Analyst at Counter Tools. She has a decade of experience working on commercial tobacco prevention and control in the retail environment. In that time she has worked with Counter Tools' client-partners across the country providing technical assistance, training, consultation, and subject matter expertise on policy, systems, and environmental solutions for improving the health of the retail environment and advancing health equity, and she has served as the managing editor of CounterTobacco.org. She received her Master of Public Health in Health Behavior from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BA in Psychology with a concentration in Community and Global Health from Macalester College.

Kathy Wright is a Director in the Tobacco Control Division at Vital Strategies. She has over 15 years' experience managing international programs in global health and development. Since 2018, Kathy has been leading the Policy Implementation Program, supporting 25+ cities to improve compliance with tobacco control laws, and managing the Tobacco Control Implementation Hub.
